Scope Client

Scope is a community initiated project started in 2020. It was driven by an understanding that workflows on Discord, particularly those of Powerusers, were vastly different from the average Discord user experience. My role for this project was to redesign the CMD+K menu.

Problem Statement

The Discord CMD+K menu is underused due to its limited contextual information, making navigation between servers and chats confusing and less efficient than intended.

Problem Breakdown

A user research has been done with 10 participants, aged between 17-28 years, are avid Discord users.

The research shows that only 30% of users knew CMD+K menu existed. This indicates a significant gap in user awareness and highlights the need for improved visibility and education about this feature.

User Research

Key Takeaways

Participants were asked several questions about their usage of Discord surrounding the CMD+K menu to identify potential opportunities for improvement.

CMD+K Menu

Due to the vast number of servers, many struggle to find the servers they want, as the CMD+K menu is cluttered and not user-friendly.

Usage

80% of the users uses Discord for gaming, and only 20% for work. Main reasons are, there is lack of multitasking features.

Servers Joined

Most users has around 50+ servers joined, and can pose a challenge to navigate within them.

Confused

Users struggled to keep up with messages and found the CMD+K menu confusing and difficult to use.

The Goal

To enhance the CMD+K menu’s usability and value to drive higher engagement and adoption.

Process Breakdown

Initial Design

This was the initial Scope CMD+K menu design that was given to me. While it introduced improvements such as a cleaner UI design and server icons to clearly indicate which chat belongs to which server, the improvements is not big.

List Design

The CMD+K menu’s chat list was improved with clearer details, larger server icons, and color indicators for missed mentions and chats.

First Explorations

This is my first design for the new Scope CMD+K menu, combining v2 and v3 lists with pink indicators for mentions and gray for missed chats to enhance visual clarity. This differentiation was intended to provide visual clarity and help users easily distinguish between the two.

Failed Feature Suggestion

While improving usability, I explored ways to make the CMD+K menu more powerful, inspired by Raycast. My initial idea was to add full chats to the menu, allowing quick replies without leaving it. However, the team rejected this, as clicking would still redirect users to the chat.

Second Explorations

The team decided to combine the search bar and lists into a single block, as separation was unnecessary. I also removed the redundant "Looking for something?" title, as the search bar already explains the menu's purpose.

Commands Driven Feature

After discussions with the Scope design team, we added Commands to the menu, enabling users to manage server tasks and Discord-wide features like adding friends. This makes the CMD+K menu a more efficient, all-in-one shortcut.

Final Design

To accommodate the numerous servers on the list, I added a scroll bar on the side. Additionally, I included a brief instruction at the bottom of the menu, with optional shortcuts if needed by the Scope team. This will inform users about the Command functions.
